StartLogic
- a relatively new web hosting company,
which, in a short space of time became well known for their
excellent customer service and reliability. Also they
provide a wide range of features in their inexpensive web
hosting plans. Many hosting companies specialize in either
Unix or Windows based hosting plans, but StartLogic
provides both, as well as virtual and dedicated hosting.
Launched in 2003, StartLogic served over 30,000 clients
by March 2005. As many of the best web hosting companies
do, they offer a 30 day money back guarantee on their
products, and they guarantee 99.9% uptime on their servers.
The uptime guarantee would mean a maximum downtime of less
than 45 minutes per month.
StartLogic offers 24/7 toll free phone support, and
also online live chat. You can ring them up any time day or
night on a toll free number, and speak to a well-trained
member of staff about a problem.
StartLogic's Unix based, shared web hosting plan, Pro
Logic, comes at only $7.50 per month, setup free of
charge. Corresponding hosting plans provided by other
companies generally come at a slightly higher price.
With Pro Logic you get a free domain name, 5GB of disk
space, 100GB of monthly data transfer (bandwidth), and
unlimited POP email accounts. The plan comes with FrontPage
extensions (2000/2002/2003) and e-commerce shopping carts:
OS Commerce, Agora and Pay Pal. It supports scripting in
CGI, PHP and Perl. Pro Logic comes with MySQL database
facility, with phpMyAdmin interface.
With Pro Logic, you may use a website builder which
supplies hundreds of professionally designed web
templates.
Other web hosting plans provided by StartLogic include
a Windows based plan for $9.95 per month, slightly more
expensive than the Unix based Pro Logic plan. The Windows
plan includes ASP.net. The dedicated server plans start at
$99 per month.
StartLogic uses vDeck as their control panel for
clients to manage their websites. A highly intuitive and
easy to use control panel, vDeck enables you to create
websites, shopping carts, install scripts, and manage
email. However many people, including myself, find that the
control panel offers an insufficient help facility. Also at
the time of writing this review, the FAQ section still
displays "coming soon".
The world class data center, situated in Phoenix
Arizona uses redundant optical fiber connections supplied
by Cox Communications, Qwest, ELI Inc, Broadwing
Communications, UUNet and Global Crossing. The high level
of redundancy enables the high uptimes and reliability. The
environment within the data center is well controlled:
raised floors, HVAC temperature control systems, redundant
power, UPS backup, power conditioning systems and
generators. |
